Artist Spotlight: Scot Borofsky

Scot Borofsky's August 2025 solo presentation at Hardware Gallery brought together five decades-spanning works — from the 1985 watercolor "Pink" through 2024's "Yonder Wall" and "Written in Time." Borofsky's practice moves between the raw immediacy of the street (his early work grew out of New York's 1980s graffiti and mural scene) and a more deliberate, symbol-laden studio vocabulary: totemic figures, coyotes, and hand-forms recur across the exhibited pieces, including "Kissed by a Wolf" (2017) and "Coyote and Medicine Woman" (2017).

The exhibition traced the artist's evolution through pivotal bodies of work, demonstrating how Borofsky's engagement with social and spiritual themes has deepened over time. From street-level interventions to contemplative studio work, each piece in the presentation carries the weight of personal and cultural investigation. The recurring imagery of wolves, coyotes, and gestural hand-forms functions as a visual language for exploring vulnerability, transformation, and connection to the natural world.

Shown alongside Ford Crull's paintings, the two artists' work anchored Hardware Gallery's Composers Concordance event on October 11, 2025 — a multidisciplinary evening pairing new musical compositions and poetry with the paintings on view. This collaborative presentation expanded the exhibition beyond visual art, creating a context where Borofsky's decades of artistic exploration resonated with live music and spoken word, deepening the audience's engagement with both artists' respective practices.
