Christopher Hart Chambers

Christopher Hart Chambers is an American artist based in New York City, born in Manhattan in 1960, where he has lived and worked throughout his career. He began as a self-taught street artist: by age 19 he had walked away from various scholarships and formal programs to paste original works on paper around NYC. He co-founded AVANT, one of the first artist collectives to treat the city street itself as an exhibition space — work made in the studio and shown outdoors, unmediated.

His practice underwent a major shift in 2002, moving from traditional two-dimensional painting into sculpture and bas-relief. This sculptural body of work draws on post-war American consumerism and industrial aesthetics — sports cars, hot rods, speedboats, spacecraft — and corporate visual language like logos and roadside signage. His primary sculptural material is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS/Styrofoam), carved and coated in resin using techniques borrowed from surfboard construction.

Chambers describes his artistic drive plainly: "I never intended to become an artist. I was born that way. I am influenced by everything I see, hear, smell, touch, experience." Beyond studio practice, he is also a prolific art writer for Whitehot Magazine and Sculpture magazine, and has curated roughly fifty exhibitions.
